PUDUCHERRY: Union Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture V. Narayanasamy has promised to get Rs. 1,000 crore from the Centre to execute welfare and development projects in the Union Territory.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday for the first time after being inducted into the Union Cabinet, Mr. Narayanasamy said that he had already taken up the issue of additional funds with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Both of them had agreed to consider the demands raised by the territorial administration, he said.

Promising to get an additional Rs. 1,000 crore for welfare and infrastructure projects, he said all assurances given to voters such as subsidised bus pass to students from rural areas, distribution of television sets, houses for tsunami victims and rice for Re. 1 a kg would be fulfilled.

On the fate of government medical college at Thattanchavady, he said the Union Territory was committed to completing the project. Steps were being considered to start the medical college such as seeking the approval of the Medical Council of India to have the college in Thattanchavady and upgrading Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute to the level of medical college hospital.

However, this could be done only after the MCI made amendment to its “unitary campus” policy, which makes it mandatory to have the college and hospital in one campus, Mr. Narayanasamy said. The government was also weighing the option of constructing the hospital on its own with minimal expenditure as it was done in Andhra Pradesh.

When asked about modernisation of textile mills in Puducherry, he said that he would approach the Union Minister of Textiles, Dayanidhi Maran.

“I can assure that the mills will be modernised,” he said.

Mr. Narayanasamy promised to get the assistance of Union government for speedy implementation of Special Economic Zones and Port.

Rangasamy, he said, “I have informed the party high command about who all campaigned during the elections and who didn’t.” On the issue of Rajya Sabha seat, he said it would be decided by the party high command
